Manufacturing 4.0

The application of new information and communication technologies offers the manufacturing sector innovative production models but also the possibility of redesigning the functionality of its products by embedding a growing number of services. The Internet of Things defines a steady connection between manufacturing industry and products sold, creating a whole new dimension in the relationship between producer and user, whereby the latter now becomes a precious source of data. This fourth phase of the industrial revolution is raising interest of businesses, amongst which the knowledge intensive manufacturing startups represent the most advanced manufacturing sector, but it also impacts the human capital - thus the education system - for the necessary competences and skills that will be needed in order to adopt and best value the new technologies. Prerequisites of this evolution are infrastructures and the digital inclination of citizens.
